Overcome Your "First Yoga Class" Fear

I’ll be the first to admit, I was nervous for my first yoga class. Walking into a new space alone, surrounded by people I'd never met before, whom I assumed were a lot stronger and more flexible than me. I was intimidated. But once the soothing music came on, the lights were dimmed, and the calming voice of the instructor commenced, I was instantly relaxed. My eyes were closed, and I was concentrating on breathing and nothing else just like every other person in the room.

By the end of the class my body felt full of movement, my muscles were relaxed, and my headache was gone. From that day forward, I have been attending yoga every week.

Yoga is for everyone! There is no age limit. As you can imagine there is a whole spectrum of strength and levels of flexibility. It’s not as hard as you might think, and every posture can be customised to you. If you’re nervous, try sitting in the middle at the back of the class so you can relax and watch what the people in front of you are doing.

Be Bold

  • Buy some new activewear to boost your confidence.
  • Buy a yoga mat that makes you excited to use.
  • Call a yoga instructor and ask them questions that are concerning you. They're there to help!
  • Sign up to yoga class
  • Connect with others and make a new circle of friends.
  • Don’t give up – over come your fear and go to your first class.

Be Brave

  • Learn a few postures in the comfort of your own home. HERE is a great place to begin.
  • Google some basic yoga terminology such as ‘namaste’
  • Grab a friend and attend yoga together…everything’s better with a friend.
  • Know what you need to bring
  • Keep your head held high and walk into that room with an open mind.
  • Ask for help – Let the instructor know this is your first class and ask for extra guidance.

Be You

  • There are no comparisons in a yoga class as everyone’s body works differently. Therefore, you shouldn’t compare your flexibility or strength to anyone else.
  • Be confident in your own skin.
  • Don’t push yourself too far, only do what makes you feel good.
  • Relax and sink deep into the breathing exercises.
  • Enjoy yourself and make the most of the rare opportunity for quiet 'you time'.

Yoga has many physical and emotional benefits. It forms outer awareness and inner awakening, as well as improving your overall wellbeing and mindset.

Take the leap and your body will love you for it!
